Hello! I’m Rachel Saturn Hathoot.
I’m a working mom and an enthusiastic collector of creative hobbies. Namely: knitting, painting, sewing, writing, graphic design, and drawing.
Like most creative people, I float through life fueled by and endless supply of creative inspiration and energy. At the end of a long day of working and parenting, I’m eager to whip out my sketchbook and let masterpieces flow naturally from my imagination.
…kidding…
Like most people, especially parents, I’m short on free time, I’m pulled in a million directions each day, and I’d usually rather melt into the couch.
But I’ve had both periods in my life where I was creating abundantly, and periods where my art supplies collected dust in my drawers, and it taught me one thing for certain: that my life feels more meaningful when I’m making things. I feel more excited about who I am, and who I am becoming.
So, I live by a simple commitment to treat creative practice as a priority, not an afterthought.
It lives on the same shelf as exercise, quality time with the people I love, keeping a reasonably clean house, and eating vegetables.
In practice, this means that when my son finally goes to bed and all I want to do is melt into the couch and scroll, I make myself open my laptop and write instead, the same way someone drags themselves to the gym even when every part of them would rather stay in bed.
It also means drawing something rushed and half-finished, knowing darn well it’s not going to live up to the grand idea living in my head, because twenty minutes of imperfect is still better than zero minutes of perfect.
And sometimes it means leaving the dishes in the sink to fill a page in my sketchbook. No shame here. Just an ordinary trade-off. A clean house doesn’t get to win every time.
I believe building a creative life takes two things: practical ways to make creativity fit into a busy life, and the belief that it’s worth making room for in the first place.
And that’s exactly why I’m here!
First, to tell you that the creative life you’re hoping for probably isn’t waiting on a less busy schedule or a sudden burst of inspiration.
It begins when you decide creativity matters and build a life that reflects that decision.
I’ll share nudges toward a more creative life, like:
Systems and gentle accountability for prioritizing creativity
Artifacts and reflections from my own creative practice
Curated inspiration from around the internet and everyday life
Creative challenges to try alongside me
More than this, I hope this publication gently chips away at the beliefs that keep so many of us from creating in the first place.
I hope you come to believe that making something “just because” is the furthest thing from a waste of time.
That creative practice isn’t a luxury or a reward for finishing your to-do list. It’s one of the ordinary practices of a well-lived life. It belongs in adult lives like yours and mine, alongside jobs, mortgages, marriages, kids, dishes, doctor’s appointments, and grocery shopping.
And whatever you make doesn’t have to earn its place in your life by becoming impressive or profitable.
It deserves a place in your life simply because making things is part of being human. Creativity helps us become more curious, observant, playful, and fully engaged in our own lives.
All this, wrapped up in a highly visual, hopeful little corner of the internet.
If any of this resonates, I’d love for you to stick around!
With love,
Rachel
